Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre

Hello From Halo…

“Award winning social enterprise Halo Leisure is bringing its expertise in getting more people more active to Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre.

There are exciting plans for the leisure facilities at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre thanks to a new partnership between Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council and Halo Leisure. The partnership means the Council will still own the building and facilities, and have a big say on how they are run and developed, especially when it comes to what’s on offer. Award winning social enterprise Halo Leisure will now be responsible for managing and maintaining the leisure centre for the immediate future, starting on 1st May 2024.

For over twenty years Halo Leisure has helped the people of Bridgend County, Gloucester, Herefordshire, Shropshire and Wiltshire to live a healthier and more active life by managing the leisure centres and swimming pools on behalf of the local councils. Halo is a social enterprise and registered charity. This means that we don’t have shareholders and any surplus money is put back into the services and facilities. This helps to keep costs low and offer outstanding value for money so everyone can enjoy an exciting range of leisure opportunities. We’ve won multiple national awards, in recognition of our work to develop leisure opportunities for local communities. We know how important swimming is especially to children and families, so we are committed to reopening the pool as soon as practically possible – watch this space for updates.

It is very much business as usual and you can still book your activities in the same way. But do check out the staff’s new uniforms. We are looking forward to welcoming you to a work out or wind down soon.”

Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre opened its doors to the public in October 2008.

Conveniently located within the Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Village, the centre offers a wide range of facilities and activities suitable for all ages and abilities.

GREAT NEWS – the pools are now open. Check out our most up to date timetables HERE

Thanks to a £5 million investment by Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Programme, Salix Finance and Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council, the aquatic facilities have had a facelift. You can work out or wind down in:

  • Main swimming pool (25m with six lanes)
  • Teaching pool
  • Splash pool with interactive water play
  • Refurbished changing facilities

Good to know’s:

  • The pools have been closed for some time, so we think it is sensible to have a gentle ‘soft’ launch in terms of the reopening and timetable to allow us to get back into the swing of things.
  • PHASE 1 timetable will run from Saturday 25th May – Sunday 2nd June where early morning Swim for Fitness sessions (the new name for Lane Swimming) and Family Time are available across the 3 pools.
  • Don’t forget your £1 coin or token for the lockers.
  • If you have a monthly or annual membership with Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre or Aberfan Community Centre – swimming is part of your membership – so you can use the pools at the Leisure Centre for no extra charge.
  • The pools are open to non members:
    • Adult Swim £4.50 per session.
    • Under 18 & Over 60 £3 per session.
    • 0-3 FREE of charge.
    • Spectators FREE.
  • There is no need to book – just turn up and enjoy but the sessions are available on a first come first served basis.
  • Sessions last 1.5 hours.
  • Enjoy a pre or post swim snack or drink in our onsite cafe.
  • FREE onsite parking.

In Phase 2-4 we will really make a splash in terms of aquatic activities:

  • PHASE 2 – 3rd June to end of summer you’ll see:
    • A wider programme of early morning, lunchtime and evening swim sessions.
    • FREE swimming for over 60’s and under 16’s as part of the Welsh Government’s Free Swim Initiative (FSI).
    • Family sessions at weekends.
    • Ladies only sessions.
